Laparoscopic Spaying
At Mississauga Animal Hospital, we offer laparoscopic spaying, a minimally invasive procedure that provides many benefits over traditional spaying techniques.

Laparoscopic Spaying: A Modern Approach to Spaying Your Pet
Unlike the traditional method, a laparoscopic spay removes only the patient’s ovaries, so rather than a Ovariohysterectomy we refer to it as an Ovariectomy. By removing the ovaries, we are eliminating the production of the hormones that cause uterine infections (pyometras) and cancers, without requiring a more invasive hysterectomy (removal of the uterus).
Why Choose Laparoscopic Spaying?
Less Surgical Stress
Traditional spaying involves making a large incision in your dog’s abdomen to remove the ovaries and uterus. This can result in more stress and trauma to the body. In contrast, a laparoscopic spay uses three small keyhole incisions in the abdomen, which significantly reduces the surgical stress on your dog’s body.
Less Pain
One of the most significant advantages of laparoscopic spaying is the reduction in post-operative pain. A study published in the Journal of the Veterinary Medical Association in 2005 showed that laparoscopic spays caused up to 65% less postoperative pain than traditional spaying. The smaller incisions and less invasive nature of the procedure contribute to a much more comfortable recovery process for your dog.
Faster Recovery
Due to the minimally invasive nature of the procedure, dogs that undergo laparoscopic spays typically experience a faster recovery. The three small incisions cause less tissue damage, resulting in a shorter healing time.
